There are certain moments in life where you know you should’ve gone left instead of right. The proverbial fork in the road. Of course, that whole messy business of hindsight gets in the way. And by the time you’ve made real traction down the path you swore was the right one, you come to find out that you’d been wrong all along.

🩇 Misfortune Cookie Book Review 🩇
Rating: ⭐⭐
❝ "I guess I can't let things rest. It's not good enough for me to just sit back and let these things happen when I know I can be useful." ❞
❓ #QOTD Write a fortune and tag a #Bookstagram friend! ❓ 🩇 Alongside her sister, Lana Lee leaves Cleveland to attend a restaurant convention in sunny California. With the intention of finding ways to help her family's restaurant thrive, she's focused on making the most of the experience, only to get in the (literal) middle of a catfight between a fortune cookie vendor and the journalist who wrote her a scathing review. Lana can't escape tragedy, though; a few hours later, a body drops from the roof where Lana, her sister, and their aunt are attending a swanky party. The body belongs to Aunt Grace's friend—the same journalist who fought with the fortune cookie vendor hours earlier. Can Lana solve the murder and give Aunt Grace the closure she needs?
💜 It's always difficult to dive into a series nine books in, especially with pre-established relationships and closed cases in the MC's recent past. Thankfully, Vivien Chien does a wonderful job of alluding to her previous books without leaving newcomers in the dark. The little hints we receive about her successfully solved cases, the other Asia Village shop owners, Lana's boyfriend Detective Adam, and the Majong Matrons have me intrigued about Lana's previous adventures. I'm glad I jumped into this series in what operates as a standalone, as Lana is away from home, her friends, and the resources she usually depends on. Her relationship with her aunt was heartwarming. The little shoutout to Laguna, where I was born, was a pleasant surprise, too.
🩇 The writing was, unfortunately, unremarkable. The prose was fluffed up with cliches that felt unnatural or out of place. Given a comment Anna May makes about Lana's metabolism slowing down in her 30s, I assume Lana is in her 20s, but neither sister uses language that feels natural for a modern 20 (or 30...or 40) year-old. Too often, there are random emotional outbursts or gestures (crying, winking, laughing, etc.) that also feel out of place. The emotional whiplash was jarring enough that I had to reread scenes to make sure I wasn't missing anything.
đŸ„  Anna May's character is a constant annoyance who only seems to exist to put Lana and her sleuthing abilities down, which is unfortunate because I wanted to like her. While Anna May should have acted as a foil for Lana's brash behavior by offering a logical or cool-headed frame of mind (or essential legal advice), she's instead used to spark sisterly tension. I have three younger sisters and I've never spoken down to them the way Anna May does to Lana. With eight solved cases behind her, I would have thought Anna May was prepared for Lana's sleuthing tendencies. Her sister could have acted more as a sounding board. Instead, there's a lot of telling, rather than showing, as Lana closes herself off to process the information she's gathered. The exposition and lack of action only cause the pacing to drag.
đŸ„  Most frustrating of all was the reveal. If the killer had a handlebar mustache to twist between their fingers or a white, fluffy cat to stroke while explaining their diabolical plan, they would have. The dialogue and tone felt overly sinister, while the killer's physical actions felt awkward and illogical. Having recognized the red herring and anticipated killer early on, the reveal also lacked the tension it desperately needed for a decent ending.
🩇 For fans of the Tita Rosa's Kitchen Mystery and Spice Isle Bakery Mystery series, old Nancy Drew games, or Boxcar Children series as a kid. If you guess the killer before the halfway mark, let me know!
✹ The Vibes ✹ đŸ„  Cozy Mystery đŸ„  Part of a Series đŸ„  Nancy Drew Vibes đŸ„  California Vacation đŸ„  Female Family Bonding
🩇 Major thanks to the author Vivien Chien and publisher for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley . đŸ„° This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Death by Dumpling - Vivien Chien (A Noodle Shop Mystery, book 1)
Synopsis
Welcome to the Ho-Lee Noodle House, where the Chinese food is to die for. . .
The last place Lana Lee thought she would ever end up is back at her family’s restaurant. But after a brutal break-up and a dramatic workplace walk-out, she figures that a return to the Cleveland area to help wait tables is her best option for putting her life back together. Even if that means having to put up with her mother, who is dead-set on finding her a husband.
Lana’s love life soon becomes yesterday’s news once the restaurant’s property manager, Mr. Feng, turns up dead―after a delivery of shrimp dumplings from Ho-Lee. But how could this have happened when everyone on staff knew about Mr. Feng’s severe, life-threatening shellfish allergy? Now, with the whole restaurant under suspicion for murder and the local media in a feeding frenzy―to say nothing of the gorgeous police detective who keeps turning up for take-out―it’s up to Lana to find out who is behind Feng’s killer order. . . before her own number is up.
My Thoughts
I was completely riveted by this book from the very first paragraph on. The tone and voice of the book just spoke to me. I found myself immediately invested in Lana and her life and her family’s noodle shop. And then the mystery began.
It doesn’t take Lana very long to dive right in. Her friend – and colleague – is in trouble, and she’s determined to get ahead of it, and prove him innocent. Even if that means crossing paths with the excruciatingly good looking, and incredibly surly, lead detective on the case.
The deeper Lana dives, the more secrets of the plaza where she grew up she uncovers. With every new bit of information she uncovers, it isn’t long before her lists of suspects shrinks. And the possibilities are pretty heartbreaking for the entire plaza.
This book hooked me with its incredible characters, and then kept me with the mystery, and Lana’s less-than-subtle sleuthing skills. I loved watching her work out the puzzle with her best friend Megan, even if it meant annoying the very, very handsome detective. And Detective Adam Trudeau definitely has his hands full with Lana Lee.
Death by Dumpling is a great start to what I think is going to be a very, very fun series! I can’t wait to keep reading!

Dead Boy Detectives has everything:
Co Dependent queer platonic tough to define Best Freinds who would and have gone to hell for each other. they have an office with a cupboard full of board games, and a long history of Noodle Incident cases of '04, and also a bunch of maneuvers with code names. They are also ghosts who solve mysteries for other ghosts.
One is a sassy well read diva in a stupid little bowtie. he keeps meticulous notes, and went to hell on a technicality. he has no rizz and has a sexual awakening at the hands (paws?) of a supernatural Cat King
the other is a cheerful happy bruiser, the brawn with a pocket demension only he can navigate in his backpack, a magic cricket bat, and wells of anger deep down
they team up with a cool psychic (whos also a pretty tree) dealing with her asshole abusive boyfriend who was literally a demon while also trying to restore her memories (she also has a hilarious hate off off with the nerdy one)
then they add a sweet shut in who isn't very brave but is very inquisitive and has excellent reading comprehension and is actually the most brave
and their landlady is a hot goth Sapphic butcher who is done with their shit (but not really)
and the main antagonist is a cunt serving witch with an iron cane chewing up the scenery, just camp queen obsessed with Beauty and Revenge as she should be
she turns her crow familiar into an astrology loving twink to honeypot the nerdy one but the crow catches feelings whoops
the cat king who deserves his own mention again. he's here to seduce a stuffy British detective/tease, cause problems on purpose, reluctantly help solve those problems and mostly slut it up.
a bureaucrat learns to VERY reluctantly embrace the beautiful power of friendship after being swallowed by a fish
its set in a gorgeous seaside town with a light house! and a malt shop!
because this is all A Scooby Doo homage!
It's an episodic Case Of The Episode format! with strong serialized elements!
and as if that wasn't enough there's even Death of The Endless.
what more could any person possibly want in a show.
oh and there's a lot of really interesting themes around internalized homophpbia, abusive relationships and trauma and toxic anger and learning to love and trust and help other people again in spite of and because of the bad parts.

Midnight Snack Mystery (Simon 'Ghost' Fic) Part 1
Wife! Reader Pregnant! Reader Hungry! Reader Possessive! Ghost Possessive! Simon 'Ghost' Riley Possessive! Simon Ghost Riley Good Cook! Simon Ghost Riley Husband! Simon 'Ghost' Riley Hungry Wife! Reader. By this time he is already Captain or Major! or Lieutenant Col! Simon 'Ghost' Riley
 Part 2,  Part 3
Long, not so-long, but light hearted read. Warning: Don't read when hungry!! Summary: Pregnant with Simon's child, Y/N experiences intense late-night cravings. Her overprotective husband, Simon, keeps a close eye on her, ensuring she’s well taken care of. However, Y/N discovers a late-night noodle shop that serves her favorite foods—dumplings and noodles—and she can’t resist the temptation. She sneaks out in the dead of night for quick food runs, careful not to wake Simon. But Simon, ever the observant one, eventually catches her in the act and decides he’s not letting her sneak off again without a word.
----------
Midnight Snack Bust
Simon stirred slightly in his sleep, his instincts sharper than most even when off-duty. The weight on his chest—a comforting one—shifted, then disappeared altogether.
His eyes fluttered open in the darkness. Your side of the bed was empty, the covers pushed back, a slight chill left in their absence. Simon frowned. This wasn’t the first time.
He waited, still as a statue, listening for any sound that might tell him where you’d gone. The faint creak of the stairs gave you away.
Downstairs, you shuffled around the kitchen, carefully balancing a plate of toast smothered in butter, jam and honey. The thought of waking Simon was laughable—he was always in full protective mode, which meant no late-night snacks for you unless he hovered like a helicopter. Besides, you could handle it. The kitchen wasn’t that far from the bed.
Except, as you turned with your snack in hand, there he was.
Simon stood in the doorway, arms crossed, a shadowy figure of unimpressed authority. The glow from the fridge cast just enough light for you to see his raised brow.
“Really?” he asked, his voice a low rumble.
You froze like a deer caught in headlights, the plate in your hands trembling slightly. “I was hungry.”
“You could’ve woken me.”
“It’s toast, Simon. I think I can manage toast.”
He stepped forward, his size practically swallowing the kitchen whole. “Not about the toast, love. It’s about the stairs. And you bein’ pregnant. You fall, then what?”
You rolled your eyes, but he plucked the plate from your hands, setting it on the counter. Without another word, he scooped you up—scooped, like a bloody princess—and started carrying you back to bed.
“Simon!” you protested, flailing slightly.
“Shush,” he muttered. “You’ve got enough on your plate—literally—without riskin’ your neck for a midnight snack.”
----------
Back in bed, Simon pulled the covers over both of you, his arm locking you in place like a human seatbelt.
“Next time, wake me,” he said, his voice softer now. “You want toast, noodles, a bloody roast dinner—I’ll get it. Just don’t go sneakin’ about.”
You sighed, nestling into his chest. “Fine. But I’m holding you to the roast dinner.”
He chuckled, the sound low and warm. “Deal.”
---------- A Wonderful Discovery
One sunny afternoon, you and Price’s fiancĂ©e (A/N: Same person from Papa Bear!! Material ;) and many more in this universe of mine, lol! ) decided to meet at a charming little tea house. It had become a bit of a routine—your way of catching up without the boys around to interrupt with their dry humor and war stories.
She was her usual lively self, flipping through the menu even though she’d already decided on her order. You admired how she could make even the simplest thing—like picking a biscuit—seem like an adventure.
“I’ve got to tell you,” she said suddenly, setting her menu down. “There’s this noodle shop. Open late. Best dumplings you’ll ever have. Like, melt-in-your-mouth, life-changing dumplings.”
Your eyebrows rose. “Late-night noodles? Around here?”
She nodded, leaning forward as if sharing a state secret. “Not just noodles—bao buns, dumplings, the works. I discovered it after one of those long nights when John was stuck at the base, and I didn’t feel like cooking. It’s a lifesaver. You’re lucky—it’s right near your place.”
Your interest piqued immediately. The thought of sneaking out for some steaming hot noodles had your mouth watering. “How late are we talking?”
She grinned. “Oh, past midnight. Maybe even 2 or 3 AM.”
----------
That night, as you lay in bed listening to Simon’s soft snores, the thought of that noodle shop lingered. You could almost taste the broth, the tender dumplings, the savory goodness of a late-night food escapade.
The idea began to take root.
----------
Late Night Escape
The idea simmered in your mind all evening. By the time Simon had brushed his teeth, pulled on his oversized sleep shirt, and settled into bed, it had blossomed into a full-blown plan.
You waited. And waited. Timing was everything. Simon’s arm, draped heavily across your waist, rose and fell with the rhythm of his breathing. His presence was solid and warm, a comforting weight—but tonight, it was your obstacle.
Carefully, you began to inch away, moving like a prisoner attempting to slip past a sleeping guard. His hand twitched, and you froze, holding your breath. After a long moment, he let out a soft snore.
Victory.
Sliding out of bed, you padded quietly to the wardrobe, pulling on Simon’s oversized hoodie and slipping into your trusty anti-slip slippers. The eco bag was stashed by the door, waiting. You slipped it over your shoulder, opened the door as quietly as you could, and stepped out into the cool night air.
The noodle shop wasn’t far, but with the chill nipping at your cheeks, it felt like forever. When you finally reached the warm glow of the restaurant, the smells of rich broth and freshly steamed dumplings greeted you like an old friend.
Sliding into a seat, you ordered a large bowl of noodles and a plate of dumplings. The first bite was pure heaven—warm, savory, comforting. This wasn’t just food. This was rebellion. A delicious act of defiance against Simon’s overprotectiveness.
You ate quickly, savoring each bite but keeping an eye on the clock. You couldn’t risk being gone too long, or Simon might wake up. When you finished, you wiped your hands, packed your leftovers into your eco bag, and headed home, feeling victorious.
----------
Simon hadn’t stirred when you returned. You slipped into bed, placing the bag under the bed for good measure. His arm instinctively found your waist again, and you smiled to yourself, utterly pleased.
But this wasn’t going to be a one-time thing.
----------
First Catch
It started feeling too easy. You’d mastered the art of sneaking out: the slow, deliberate slide from under Simon’s arm, the silent shuffle to the door, and the perfectly timed return. Your noodle escapades had become a nightly ritual.
But then, one night, your luck ran out.
You were tiptoeing into the kitchen, quietly opening the fridge to stash the leftover dumplings behind the unassuming bag of lettuce Simon would never touch, when a deep voice cut through the silence.
“Late-night fridge rearranging, are we?”
You jumped, spinning around with a gasp. Simon was leaning against the doorway, arms crossed, his imposing figure illuminated by the dim light of the open fridge.
Your mind scrambled for an excuse. “Uh... just wanted some water.”
“In my hoodie? And with an eco bag?” His eyebrow arched, unimpressed.
You tried to tuck the bag behind you, but Simon’s sharp eyes had already caught the unmistakable sheen of takeout containers poking out from the top. He strode forward, plucked the bag from your hands with an annoyingly effortless tug, and opened it.
The aroma of noodles and dumplings betrayed you instantly.
“Water, huh?” He held up a dumpling with mock seriousness. “This what they’re calling it these days?”
You gulped.
----------
Minutes later, you found yourself seated at the kitchen table like a scolded child. Simon, clad in sweatpants and a scowl, had taken over the stove. The sight of him cooking—rolling up his sleeves with a tired sigh—might’ve been endearing if you weren’t on the receiving end of his disapproval.
“You could’ve woken me,” he grumbled, cracking eggs into a bowl with more force than necessary.
“You were sleeping,” you mumbled.
“I’d rather get up than have you sneakin’ around at night,” he said, his tone gruff. “What if somethin’ happened, eh? You’re waddling about in the dark like a burglar.”
You snorted at the image, which earned you a sharp look.
“Not funny,” he said, though the corner of his mouth twitched. “I’ll make the bloody noodles if that’s what you want. Just stop sneakin’ out.”
You stayed silent, chewing on your lower lip. No way were you telling him about the noodle shop.
---------
Close Call
Old habits die hard. A few nights later, you were returning from the noodle shop, quietly slipping into the kitchen to stash your leftovers behind the condiments, when Simon stirred upstairs.
He came padding down the stairs just as you were closing the fridge.
“You were gone,” he murmured groggily, rubbing his face.
“Kitchen,” you lied quickly, holding up an empty glass of water as proof.
He hummed, unconvinced, and squinted at you. “Should’ve woken me.”
“For the kitchen?” you asked, feigning innocence.
“For whatever,” he grunted, his eyes scanning the counter before settling on the fridge. “Don’t like you wanderin’ about on your own.”
You gave him your best innocent smile and shuffled past him toward the stairs. Simon followed a moment later, his suspicion lingering like a shadow.
----------
Growing Suspicion
It started with a nagging feeling Simon couldn’t shake. You were always warm when you came back to bed, slightly out of breath, and he could swear he caught the faintest hint of soy sauce and sesame lingering in the air.
One night, as you slid into bed beside him, he cracked an eye open just enough to catch you pulling off his oversized hoodie. You were trying to be quiet, moving with all the stealth of someone trying not to get caught.
He didn’t say anything. Not yet. But his mind was racing.
The next night, he pretended to be deep asleep as you started your routine. The slow untangling from his grasp, the soft shuffle to grab your hoodie and slippers. He cracked his eye open just as you tiptoed out of the room, eco bag in hand.
Simon lay there for a moment, his jaw tightening. He didn’t believe in jumping to conclusions without evidence—years of military experience had drilled that into him. But this was his wife, and the secrecy was starting to itch.
----------
The Watchful Eye
The next few nights, Simon kept up his act. He watched you go through the same routine: hoodie on, bag in hand, slippers padding softly across the floor. Each time, he waited until you were out of earshot before sitting up and staring at the door.
He debated following you right then and there but decided against it. Instead, he lay back, staring at the ceiling, letting the suspicion simmer.
Until one night, he’d had enough.
----------
Caught in the Act
Simon Riley, a man known for his ability to track an enemy through any terrain in total darkness, cracked one eye open as he heard the faint creak of the bedroom door. His wife, waddling like a stealthy penguin in his oversized hoodie, had escaped once again.
He sat up, running a hand down his face, and muttered, “Bloody hell.” This was the third time this week, and it was starting to feel personal. He reached for his jumper, his movements slow and deliberate.
By the time Simon made it outside, you were already a good distance ahead, waddling down the street with your eco bag swinging by your side. He trailed behind, staying in the shadows like a proper ghost, his breath visible in the chilly night air.
When you entered the noodle shop, he stopped just outside, watching through the window. You were already at a corner table, your face lighting up as the server placed a steaming bowl of noodles in front of you. Then came the dumplings, and your joy was almost palpable.
Simon shook his head, muttering, “Unbelievable,” before pushing the door open. The little bell above the door jingled, but you didn’t notice—too engrossed in your noodles.
He approached silently, stopping just behind you. “Enjoyin’ yourself, are ya?”
You froze mid-slurp, a noodle dangling from your lips. That voice. You’d recognize that deep, gravelly tone anywhere.
Slowly, you turned your head to see Simon standing there, arms crossed and a single brow arched. His expression was equal parts amusement and exasperation.
“I, uh
” You scrambled for an excuse, your voice muffled by the noodle still in your mouth. “Toilet break?”
“Toilet break?” he repeated, pulling out the chair across from you and sitting down. “Love, the loo doesn’t serve dumplings.”
A/N:
Just a heads up—Captain Price’s fiancĂ©e in this story is the same lady from Papa Bear Material—Mama Bear! So, if you've read that story, you might recognize her. As for the characters of Y/N, both are technically the same person, so feel free to choose who you identify with!
Y/N’s been caught. And now, Simon’s not having it. And with that, stay tuned for Part 2. Simon’s not letting this go anytime soon

Edit: Part 2 is here!----->

HI!!! so i am obsessed with your reader x coworker james first kiss fic. can we maybe get something about what came after? like how were the interactions the day or week after, how did they behave around each other, did james tell the boys or was he too nervous?
—you and James maintain a facade that Remus sees through
James wheels his chair to be as far from you as possible. He leans back, turns his monitor. Through the gap, he has a perfect window of your face without it being obvious that he’s staring. Well, sort of.
Stop staring.
James reads Remus’ slack message in surprise. He glances at you, finds you still snacking on chocolate covered somethings less covertly than you mean to be, and decides to grace his friend with a message back.
Nope
James, Remus messages.
I’m not really staring
You’re staring. She can definitely tell
James looks back to you, hoping to prove Remus wrong, but you’re staring straight at him. He has the instinct to look away and the sense not to, charmed into grinning when you squint at him, your mock suspiciousness adorable.
“James,” Remus says, clearing his throat.
James pulls his gaze away reluctantly. “What?”
“Can you answer my email?”
The email isn’t an email, but another slack message. Are you serious right now? You couldn’t be more obvious if you tried
James flicks a pen lid at him. “Obvious about what?” he mouths.
You get up and stretch, tactically failing to meet anyone’s eyes as you pick up your empty glass of water and leave.
“James, what’s going on?”
“What ever could you mean, my love?”
Remus rolls his chair toward. “Don’t flirt with me. I’m serious, what the hell is going on with you? You’re supposed to hate the girl.”
“Hate is such a strong word.”
“Well, you’re being a bit much no matter what.”
James bites his cheek in a hurry to straighten up. “You think so?”
Remus just stares at him.
James has done a fantastic job at keeping your kiss a secret. He doesn’t know how, mind you —you kissed him, you kissed him, you asked if you could and you kissed him like a sweetheart with the softest mouth he’s ever had the fortune to feel pressed against his own.
Since your kiss, he’s been feeling weirdly poetic. He totally gets all those Carol Ann Duffy poems they made him read at school now.
One day without telling anybody is impressive, at least to his own standards. “I know what I’m doing,” he says.
Remus frowns. “I’d love to be informed on what exactly that is.”
“Certain events have transpired and convinced me that I was quite wrong to have judged our girl so harshly.”
“Certain events?”
“I’m allowed some mystery,” James says, before smiling so hard it makes him squint and his cheeks apple. He rubs at his face roughly in an attempt to move forward, but he remembers the way your kiss had melded from soft and shy to hungry. Fuck, he loved it. He needs another one. He has no idea how to get it. “Ugh, I’m gonna go get my lunch from the fridge.”
“Sure you are. Alright, well, I’m gonna find Sirius and maybe he can convince you to start acting normal again.”
James goes to the kitchen first but abandons his charade when you aren’t there. He grabs his lunch, tucking it under his arm as he makes his way through to the break room. You’re thankfully, blissfully, sitting by the open window with a shop-bought salad.
He nods at the chair across from you. “Can I sit?”
“Yes.”
“That’s all you're eating?” he asks. A little tray of salad is hardly enough to keep you going until the end of the day. “I have gyoza chilli noodle soup, it’s amazing.”
“You’re gonna eat it cold?” you ask.
He leans forward, elbows on the table, holding your gaze. “No, but I’m busy right now.” He needs time to look you over. Every time he realises how pretty you are is like another beat of his capering pulse.
“Don’t harass me.”
“I’m not harassing you.”
“What would you call this?” You stab a few pieces of lettuce onto your fork. “I can’t have much more for dinner, I just had half a packet of chocolate covered strawberries.”
“Don’t say that, like some snacks and a salad are more than you’re allowed. Here, I'll warm this up and you can share. You’ll really like it, the gyoza are amazing.”
“So what, you’re gonna take care of me now?” you ask. You’re teasing, but there’s a slight edge of bitterness to it like you believe what you’re saying. James is swift to set that right, though he stays speaking in tongues with you.
“I’ve been trying to.” James can hear footsteps at the doorway, and besides, you’re right, he’s being too nice. He sucks in an unbothered breath. “Whatever, loser, stick to your sad salad.”
Your eyes widen. “I don’t want your cold soup, you idiot.”
Sirius and Remus filter in with one of your coworkers just behind them. “I thought you said he was being weird?” Sirius asks. “He seems pretty normal to me.”
Remus sighs forlornly, prompting a side hug from his boyfriend as he shepherds him to the table where you and James are sitting.
“He’s always being weird,” you say.
James kicks your foot gently. You pick through your salad with a poorly concealed smile.

You know in the movies where someone says “You can’t fire me, I quit!”
maybe don’t do that in real life. Unless you don’t mind working as a server in your parents’ Chinese restaurant for the rest of your life.

2025 Anticipated books
Tumblr media
Hi everyone,
Happy New Year, I hope everyone is well. Ok I am super excited for this year. I have so many books to look forward to this year. I am hoping to read more books from the Twisted Tale series.
Fantasy
Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft: Heir of Strahd by Delilah S. Dawson- I love D&D, and this is a campaign that I really want to get play. One of my bookish goals is to get the book “I, Strahd: The Memoirs of a Vampire”. I find vampires fascinating. Now this book the description doesn’t give too much away. All we do know is that a group of adventurers are summoned by the dark lord of Barvoia.
Tusk Love by Thea Guanzon- I love to watch Critical Role campaigns! I came in at campaign two and I love all the characters (I do need to finish listening to it). But a well know romance book called “Tusk Love” is prominent in the campaign. I am interested in reading it, since this was such a vocal point for comedy in the campaign.
Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree- I jumped for joy when I saw that book three of my favorite fantasy series is get another book. I am a little disappointed that the main character is not Viv, but a character from Bookshops & Bonedust but I am still happy that we are getting a new book.
Heartbroken by Serna Valentino- this is a book in the Villains series by Disney. I haven’t read any books in this series, but this has one of my favorite Disney villains front and center her royal majesty the Queen of Hearts. So, I will have to wait and see if I like the series.
Roll for Danger: The Cursed Catacombs by Nick Eliopulos- this is a choose your own adventure like book and the author of the Deephaven books are illustrating the book. Looks like it’s the standard newbie adventure of a quest to find a special flower/treasure in some caves. I am looking forward to reading this.
Fool’s Gold: Death by Karaoke by Jenna Woldenga, Felix Irnich, Christopher Hastings, Avery Howett, Princess Abella- This, this book is the book that has made my MVB (Most Important Book) for this year. I love watching Dingo Doodles’ series, besides Critical Role, I think she is one of the D&D people that got me interested in playing. But the big question that I have for the series is are we going to get answers about the ship that was in the purple crystal.
Mystery
Strange Houses by Uketsu- I have been collecting the manga, and when I found out that the states is getting a translated version of the original novel I am totally stoke for it. This is one of my first Japanese mysteries and I am glad that I took the leap when the manga came out, I can’t wait for this one to come out.
Nancy Drew Diaries: Superstitions of “The Scottish Play” by Carolyn Keene- Nancy Drew still alive and well and I am very interested in this book. Now with a little knowledge about the Scottish play this mystery I have high hopes.
My Little Pony Maretime Mysteries by Stephanie Williams- I haven’t watched the new series with the new ponies, but this is a mystery so I am looking forward to reading it.
Cozy Mysteries:
Schooled in Murder by Victoria Gilbert- the title stuck out to me, I do get some dark academia vibes, but I’ll have to wait and see if I am right. So, the main character Jennifer Dalton, who is an author/teacher at the university. Her coworkers are a bit snooty, saying that she writes fiction. One of her students got into a fight with another teacher and the teacher turned up dead, with the student becoming suspect number 1.  So, Jennifier gets a team of amateur sleuths together to see what happens. It sounds interesting and I am always looking for a new cozy to read.
Killing Me Souffle by Ellie Alexander- the latest Bakeshop mystery book the cover art is always a treat (ha) to look at. I am still working my way through the whole series, but the Bakeshop series has always been a go too to de-stress from a chaotic day.
The Chow Maniac by Vivien Chien- Yes, I love this series, I am an avid fan of the series, and I am always happy when I see a new book.
Murder By Cheesecake: a Golden Girls Cozy Mystery by Rachel Ekstrom Courage- I am very curious about this book; I have watched that episode where the ladies took part in murder mystery weekend (and yes that is one of my favorite episodes). I am hoping that this will be a series, and I do hope there are plenty of clap backs that the girls are known for.
Bait and Swiss a Cheese Shop mystery by Korina Moss- I have been a fan of the series for a while now and I have been interested to know about Willa’s Ex best friend and fiancĂ© since it was mentioned. I guess the title is very appropriate since it has got my attention.
Misc
Escape the Pizzaplex by Scott Cawthon, Lyndasy Ely- YES new year new Freddy’s book that is coming out. My opinion I love the original games very much, but I love the creativity of the Security Breach. From the looks of it we are playing the character Cassie.
Manga
Sherlock Holmes Vol 1 A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arhtur Conan Doyle- I was surprised that that they started making classic stories into manga. But when I saw that they were making Sherlock Holmes (I know they made a manga series for the BBC Sherlock) I am interested in collecting the series. I am hoping that they might make some Agatha Christie manga too.
Usotoki Rhetoric vol 10 by Ritsu Miyako- I discovered this manga last year and I have been hooked on it from the get-go. I am sad that this is the last volume in the series, but I can’t wait to read it.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Author Conan Doyle- Not much is said about this one, but I guess I’ll wait and see.
Detectives These Days are Crazy! Vol 1 by Masakuni Iharashi- I came across this series by accident but since Usotoki Rhetoric is ending I do need to find another series to fill the place for it.
I have many more books this year but these 19 books are the ones that I am most interested in and if write anymore books down, I think this would be a 4 page list but these are just the ones that are on my bookish radar for the moment that I have been looking forward too since 2024.
What are some of your anticipated books for the year?

After the session, you both collapse onto the mats, breathless and laughing. Maki’s laughter is a sound you cherish, rare and beautiful. She reaches over, her hand finding yours, fingers intertwining. The callouses on her palm are a testament to her strength and dedication.
“You’re getting better,” she murmurs, her tone filled with pride. You squeeze her hand, feeling a rush of warmth at her words.
“Thanks to you,” you reply, meeting her gaze. There’s a moment of silence, charged with unspoken emotions, and then she leans in, pressing a quick, soft kiss to your lips.

sevika and reader shopping tgt? fluffy n cutesy!!
Tumblr media
sevika x hyperfem reader
꒰ 𝝑đ“Č ꒱ sorry this is soo super short:(
Tumblr media
it was funny. seeing a big, strong, and stern faced woman carrying the shopping bags that belong to her loving smaller girlfriend. the bags were in pretty colours, contrast to the darker clothes sevika was wearing while u were dressed in all pink!
“sevi!!! can we get this? this is so cute, and it'll look so good on you! look, we could match!”
“sev, that would so suit you! should get it.”
“do you think this would look cute on me, 'vika?”
she bought some of ur clothes and accessories and so bought some of hers! u were willing to lay and she declined as she wanted to pay but u were very persisted, she gave into ur pleas easily since she can't say no to that pretty face of urs any longer.
she'd give other people a slight glare if she noticed someome checking u out or looming at the two of u weirdly. people should just mind their business, right? just two girls shopping! more like a couple shopping together, even if u could barely keep ur hands off her. u always had a hold of her hand or ur arm was wrapped around her thick arm.
the two of u went from store to store, noodle place to cheesecake place, clothing to jewellery... she even sat with u while u got ur nails done as u yapped away, and she was listening. and now, your nails were two colours, ur favourite and hers, and of course, u would do such a thing, u were such a sweetheart. this was probably the best day u have ever had with her!!!
“we soo need to get this!! it'll so good in the kitchen.” “... does look good, sweet girl.”
and soon, the two of u were on ur way back home. she's carrying u bridal style back to the car since u mentioned once that ur toes hurt and being the kind woman she was with u, she didn't want u to be in such pain:( she's such a sweetheart with u.
she shut the car door for u before she made her way to the driver seat.
“today was so fun, sevi! im super glad that u got to spend time with me.” since u knew she was always busy, but not sure with what. that was a mystery that u didn't pry about. it was none of ur business and she was glad that u respected her boundaries about such things.
“of course, sweetheart. wouldn't miss your happiness for the world.”

Hanma relationship headcannons
Tumblr media
- He definitely pulls, so he’s been with a ton of girls. None of them lasted more than 2 months, and he just used them. You were supposed to just be another girl he used then tossed away, but he ended up staying. You were fun, and he needed more people apart from Kisaki to annoy.
- This mf is definitely annoying. Can and WILL ask you if you’re on your period whenever your mad (he knows you aren’t, he’s probably being creepy and tracking your cycle too.).
- The boys in Valhalla probably ask him for advice with girls. His advice is bad.
- “Girls hate it when they call you and you don’t pick up straight away. So if you can’t answer your woman, just switch your phone off. She can’t question you if you do that.”
- “When you guys go out, don’t pay. Let the girl pay, or you’re executing toxic masculinity, and she won’t like that. You guys need to be more woke.”
- He KNOWS his advice is bad, which is why he doesn’t use any of those tips with you. If you guys go out, none of you are paying. He’ll dine and dash. Want something from a shop? Distract the guy at the counter and he’ll grab it and run.
- At this point in your relationship, he’ll probably catch feelings and he won’t just randomly dump you over text.
- When Halloween rolls around, you two prank call Kisaki and literally everyone in Valhalla.
- Despite how annoying he is, he never forgets a special occasion. He’ll act like he did only to surprise you later. Probably got you a pet chicken for your birthday but then you made him take it back because he stole it.
- Would rather DIE than admit he gets jealous whenever you interact with boys. Not just any boys, but specifically those nice guys who are sensitive and are genuinely sweet to girls.
- He can’t be like that, he’ll forever have a reputation of playing around with girls and being a womanizer. Even if he’s in a dedicated relationship with you, he still gets paranoid you might realize that you deserve better and leave him.
- Definitely high maintenance when he catches feelings. Texts you 20 times a day and expects you to reply and have a conversation with him.
- Has a bad habit of sneaking into your room whilst you’re asleep and standing over you until you wake up to scare you.
- Refuses to stop until you move in with him, and one day you do!
- Leaves empty noodle cups, dirty socks and drinking glasses all around your shared room. He won’t even help to clean, he’ll just give you a big ass grin and promise not to do it again.
- Likes to catch you off-guard, like twice a year he writes you a very meaningful poem and leaves it in the pocket of a piece of clothing you wear a lot. He expects you to give him tons of kisses whenever he does.
- Doesn’t stop talking about you to Kisaki. It’s always “Oh yeah, Y/N likes that.” “I wonder what she’s doing right now..” “Y/N says she doesn’t like you.”
- Yes, he does tell people you are pretending to like but don’t actually that you dislike them. So you probably shouldn’t tell him if you don’t like someone..
- Accuses Kisaki of being jealous whenever he tells Hanma to shut up. “Jeez, Kisaki! If you want a girlfriend, I’ll be your trusted wingman. First off, make sure to disappear randomly to make yourself mysterious, girls love that

Sympathy for the Devil ~ Part 6
Tumblr media
A Donaka Mark x housekeeper!Reader fic, based on @discoscoob 's concept & bot! Warnings: Donaka Mark is a bad man with a soft spot for you. dark romance, possessive behavior, nonconsensual voyeurism, red flag red flag girl!đŸ”ș, psychological games, power imbalance, eventual dubcon/nsfw.
one. two. three. four. five.
Tumblr media
Six. 慭
Your dark mood lasts for days. You do not shirk your duties, but you definitely brood, hating everything, most of all yourself. A part of you hopes that Donaka decides you’re not worth the trouble after a glimpse of this other side of you. He does not prod you further, seemingly steering clear of you. He had his fun taking you down a peg–what more could he want with you? Surely he has better things to do
The more time goes on, the more certain you are that his proposition was mostly in your head.
Amusingly, it’s little Mrs. Wong who gets you out of your funk, yelling at you in Cantonese and smacking you with a wooden spoon when (maybe?) you didn’t move out of her way fast enough in the kitchen. You are determined that someday she’s going to let you call her Auntie, but apparently you still have some distance to cover. Her temper is like a firecracker, loud but shortlived. She’s adorable and terrifying, and it’s all so ridiculous that you cannot stop laughing as you flee, and the shroud of your depression lifts again like the sun penetrating through the clouds.
The absurdity of life has always saved you in times like this. What do you have to be sad about, anyway? You are healthy, you are housed, and you are fed in this beautiful place. You are having an adventure. So what, if your diabolically handsome employer does not approve of you? You’re just here to clean his floors, for fuck’s sake.
Maybe Donaka Mark is rich, but that doesn’t mean he has all the answers to the mysteries of life. You find your mental state improves, when it seems like he’s ignoring you.
Flirting with the cute gardener’s assistant doesn’t hurt your state of mind either. His name is Jun, he has an infectious laugh, and he offers to show you around the city on your next day off. Thinking some down time with someone your age will do you good, you are set to meet him at the bus stop down the hill from Mr. Mark’s house.
However, he never shows. You try not to take it too hard, but it still bums you out.
He does not return with the gardener the next week either, and then you start to worry. The kind old man who tends Donaka Mark’s plants just shrugged at your inquiry and said, “He quit.”
It seems odd, but you brush it off. You suppose you’ll just have to explore the city on your own. You ask for the day off for your birthday, wanting to go do the touristy things, like ride the historic ferry and take the tram up to Victoria Peak. Maybe visit a temple, do some shopping at the Night Market, and definitely indulge in some local eats. Something about living in Hong Kong has you dreaming about noodles. It’s an affliction. You want to try them all.
On your day there is a little carved wooden box on the table where you usually partake your breakfast in the common area of the servants’ quarters. You’re not sure why your heart falls to your feet with something like dread, but somehow you just know that Mr. Mark has not forgotten about you after all.
With a forbidden thrill you flip the lid carefully, finding a domed-link silver filigree and enamel bracelet set with dreamy jade cabochons. The little details are exquisite, and you’re instantly enchanted. When you look carefully at the bauble, you realize the stylized blue designs aren’t flowers–they’re bats.
He remembered that conversation you’d had, that very first day. It warms you to your toes, and maybe scares you too. He's good to the staff, but you don't think he usually buys them jewelry.
Goddammit.
You just know, deep down, that you shouldn’t accept it. You even set it back down in the box again, just looking at it with hands on your hips.
But therein lies the crux of temptation: you want it. It’s pretty and well made, not cheap tourist junk, and
he’d put thought into this gift for you.
This bait for you, you remind yourself. It’s still hard for you to believe that he’s propositioning you, if for anything, because a man like him could have a supermodel on each arm if he wanted. What the fuck would he want with a girl like you?
Maybe
it’s just an apology?
Not likely, but surely he’s not going to expect you to sleep with him for a silver bracelet??
You have a problem, and possibly, a screw loose. You know this is a flame you should not play with. You are toeing the line, dangerously close to falling in.
What if
you just wear it today, then give it back? It’s not like he’ll know. You doubt you’ll even see him today.
It feels like a guilty secret, as you pick it up again, clasp it on your wrist, and set out for your big day. You like the weight of the heavy silver on your skin–worse yet, you like knowing that Mr. Mark selected this bauble just for you. It feels
like a badge of honor, and you know it’s stupid, to feel proud of yourself for catching the attention of a man like him–but you can’t help it.
You are smart, but sometimes? Your heart is really really stupid.
You do not return to the house until well past after dusk, nearly midnight. You made a day of it, actually able to enjoy the city since Mr. Mark pays so well. You will remember the hand pulled noodles with beef you had for dinner in the Night Market for the rest of your life, they were so delicious. Watching the chef stretch them out from a lump of dough was like a religious experience.
Having your fortune told in the Night Market was memorable too, but maybe a little unsettling. Squatted on a stool in the older woman’s stall, you paid 100HK dollars for her to look at your right hand and frown. She told you that money would never be a problem for you, but the men in your life would always cause you difficulty. Looking at your relationship with your father and every man after that, you reckon she was probably right. You know you should take it with a grain of salt, but you can’t quite shake the hum of unease in the back of your mind.
On tired feet you walk through the garden, around to the entrance to the servant’s quarters.
"Did you have a nice day?" asks a voice from the shadows. You start, then realize Mr. Mark is sitting on the carved stone bench, on the path to the servants' wing of the house, tucked back in the manicured trees.
Fuck.
Immediately you tuck your wrist behind your back.
“Mr. Mark?”
“Come here.”
Tumblr media
His voice is deliberately neutral–you can’t quite gauge his mood as you approach, feeling like a teenager caught staying out past her curfew. You have no way of knowing he has been waiting for hours, growing more and more annoyed that you are away from him, not under his watchful gaze, where you belong.
He knows where you were, if not exactly what you did. Unbeknownst to you, there is a tiny tracker inserted in your new bracelet you wear with such foolish avarice.
“Well?”
“Yes, I had a wonderful day,” you confirm, coming to stand before him, committed now even if you are walking into the lion’s den. You find it odd he’s waiting up for you, but it is a beautiful night to be out in the garden. A cool breeze is coming off the water, lifting your hair.
“Let’s see it then.” He points at your hand so casually held behind you, and you know you are caught out.
Almost guiltily, you extend your arm to show off your new acquisition in situ.
He props your hand with just the tips of his fingers, his touch maddeningly light on your sensitive palm as he turns your wrist to inspect the bracelet, sending a thrill down your arm. He likes seeing the gift that he selected upon you.
“It suits you,” he finally assesses, though you still can’t tell if he’s displeased. “Do you like it?”
“Yes,” you answer, barely above a whisper, feeling as though you are sealing something between you as you admit it.
“Well, that’s convincing.”
Your heart feels like a sea urchin lodging in your throat. You’re not sure what it is about this man that makes you want to please him–and tell him to fuck off–all in the same breath.
Then he gets to the fun part–for him. “You shouldn’t have stayed out so late alone,” he scolds you.
You cant your head and press your lips, holding in the smart remark that burns on your tongue as his coal-black eyes bore into you, settling for, "I didn't mean to worry you
but it is my day off. I think I'm free to do what I want." You just can't stop yourself from adding the last bit, and you wonder from his darkening expression if it will be your undoing.
He imagines in that moment what it would be like to reach out and put you over his knee. Instead, he stands abruptly, startling you into taking a step backwards.
He likes that.
It irks him, that you dare defy him, like he doesn’t know what’s best for you. If you insist on acting so tough, he’s tempted to throw you over his shoulder and show you just how little it would take to actually break you.
"Were you drinking?" he asks darkly, hating the thought of you out in a bar, with other men, enjoying yourself. Laughing, like you were with the young gardener not so long ago. The moment he saw that on his camera feed that he constantly watches of you, Donaka saw red. You should not give your joy to others so freely. You sprinkle it around everywhere you go, and he covets it all for himself.
That boy had to go.
"No," you defend, and you’re telling the truth. "I just...walked around." There was plenty to see in Kowloon district.
Donaka takes another step closer, his body almost pressing against yours, the heat of it warming you. He watches your reaction as he speaks, his voice low and firm. “You should have let me arrange a driver for you.”
This again. It feels as though he wants to cloister you away from experiencing the world, by shoving you in a car. "Donaka..." you sigh, slipping into using his first name for the first time ever, because you’re tired, and your feet hurt, and he is standing very close, talking to you like he has a say in what you do

It’s maddening and arousing all at once, rubbing with a velvet touch against some long long cavewoman instinct in your brain, and if you’re not careful this just might be the night he outmaneuvers you.
Donaka’s eyes narrow at hearing you dare to be so familiar with him, even if deep down he secretly loves it. He takes another step into you, crowding you against the stone wall, caging you in with an arm. He’s blocking your path to a quick exit into the servants’ quarters, you can’t help but notice. Your heart pounds in your ears–but you’re not half as afraid as you should be of this man.
“Hong Kong is pretty safe, as it goes
” you continue to protest around the sound of your heart drumming in your ears, earning a scoff.
“You have no idea, the sorts of things that could happen to a girl like you in this city.”
You can’t help but think you’re not sure if you feel safe here at home now.
“If something happened
I would have called you,” you offer up, appealing to his ego as protector, the role he’s apparently decided to take on for himself without asking you.
However, he sees right through you, rolling those beautiful dark eyes. “You should have let me take you out,” he suggests in a low tone that curls your toes in your sandals. He says it like it had been some option on your menu that you’d rejected. Never in a million years would it have even occurred to you to ask.
You find yourself doing your best impression of a fish out of water, like the ones you’d seen stacked like cord wood in the market. His other hand lifts to touch your chin lightly, closing your mouth. “Would you have liked that?”
You honestly don't know the answer to that.
This man fascinates you and repulses you. He's handsome and commanding and oh so forbidding. He scares you, but he draws you like a moth to a flame. Having these little flirtatious interactions around the house are one thing. Going out with him would be...something else entirely. The thought of what it could mean to socialize with a man like him, where you are so far from being equals, makes you uneasy. It's much safer to just...write about what might have been in your journal, later.
"I'm not sure that would be appropriate," you finally answer breathily.
His smile for you is nothing less than the wolf baring its teeth. “Why not?”
"You're my boss..." you try to defend. You scare the shit out of me is the real answer you don't dare say aloud.
Donaka can’t help the dark laugh that falls from his lips at your answer, the way you flounder as you grasp for a defense, utterly drowning. A part of him wants to claim you right here and now, for being such a sweet, soft, naive little thing in his claws.
He leans down closer to you, his head dipping down to your ear, his breath hot against your skin. “Is that the best excuse you’ve got?”
For a moment, you think your soul might evacuate from your body.
"Pretty sure it's a good one," you barely manage to reply above a whisper.
“You still don’t understand what I’m offering you, do you?” he asks, his voice deceptively gentle, a dagger clothed in velvet.
You love it how he makes you out to be the obtuse one, when he is the one who has spoken so cryptically.
“I
might,” you answer. You’re not a complete innocent, or a total philistine.
What would a VIP experience on the arm of Donaka Mark be like? Although he can be charming when he wants to be, it makes you feel more anxious than intrigued. You imagine a dinner at some high-end restaurant you could never afford. Somewhere people go to be seen, more than to eat, though the food would undoubtedly be amazing. Somewhere you would feel incredibly out of place. Then what? A ride in one of his ugly but wicked fast sports cars? A night of hedonism at some exclusive club for millionaires only? And what would he expect as payment for all this? You can’t even say you wouldn’t be willing to give it. You want this man with a voracity that is–frankly–terrifying to you.
You’ve never felt anything like it.
What you wouldn’t like is the inevitable aftermath of later: he's offering you the opportunity to give yourself up–then get thrown away, with the enjoyment of some perks in between. You could repeat your mother’s history all over again, a thing you always swore up, down, and sideways you would never do.
Donaka watches all these thoughts play across your face, without a word aloud to accompany them. You just stare, unable to speak, and he narrows his eyes at you.
“Say one sentence of the novel you just wrote in your head out loud,” he challenges.
You open your mouth to try, but nothing comes out. All you can do is look up at him with what you are sure is a pathetic expression on your face, paralyzed. He is so close, and your eyes fixate for a long, damning moment on his mouth. In the end you have to close your eyes against that laser-like stare, shaking your head.
“You know something I find interesting about you,” he goes on. You open your eyes, though your tongue is still tied. “I think if I made you choose between an Hermùs purse or that cheap bauble on your wrist this morning, you still would have chosen the bracelet, wouldn't you?”
“Yes,” you answer immediately, maybe not to your advantage. Then you feel a little relieved, glad it didn’t cost a fortune.
“Comparatively cheap,” he clarifies, as though he doesn't want you to feel too at ease. How did he know?
You narrow your eyes, lifting your wrist towards him. “Maybe
you should take it back.”
You think you might die of a heart attack, when he folds your smaller hand in his, and kisses your knuckles lightly. “It’s too late for that.”
You’re not sure what that means, but as he strokes your thumb lightly with his, you start to tremble.
“Sir
”
He pins you with his stare, looming over you, but makes no move, waiting.
“It’s getting late
and I have to work tomorrow.”
He lifts an eyebrow, smirking down at you. “And whose fault is that?”
“Mine
though it’s starting to be yours.”
He snorts. “Then ask me for the day off again,” he dares you. When you answer him with yet more paralyzed silence he gets frustrated, tilting your face up with his huge hand engulfing your jaw. For a man who works in tech
his fingers are calloused, and strong, and your legs just might go out from underneath you.  “Ask me. Say it out loud, y/n. Tell me what’s going on, behind those big eyes.”
You, however, just shake your head against his masterful grip. “You don’t want to know.”
“I like secrets, y/n. I want to know everything.” You suppose that is his bread and butter, with his security business and all his cameras
you don’t know why it never occurred to you before now, that it could be a personal obsession, as much as professional.
You’re tempted. God, are you tempted, with this beast of a man looming over you, touching you, looking through you with those piercing dark eyes. Like he wants to eat you as much as he wants to fuck you

Somehow you know if you dare go down that path
there will be no turning back.
You choose the coward’s road.
“Please
I think
it would be best
to call it a night.”
He weighs you with a heavy gaze for so long that you start to doubt he will let you go–in the darkest dungeon of your heart, you know that a part of you doesn’t want him to. It would be convenient, if he would make the choice for you. Let you taste the forbidden fruit with none of the blame

You are losing your goddamned mind over this man. You need to stop.
You never really know why in the end he releases you, pushing back from the wall to give you space. You side-step towards the door of the servant’s quarters, afraid for the predatory look he’s paying you, that he might change his mind.
"Good night, Mr. Mark," you say quietly, before disappearing into the little building where you sleep. A rush of frustration flares inside him as you scamper away–again. He narrowly resists the urge to kick down your door and show you who you belong to.
“Good night,” he answers back through gritted teeth, only the crickets left to hear him. He’ll have your secrets, one way or another. He can genuinely say he tried–a first, in so long he can’t remember when. For what happens next
you will only have yourself to blame.
